Several components
are necessary to get Internet service in your home. These components are
generally provided by a few different companies.
To begin the
process, you must obtain Internet Infrastructure (tashtit). This refers
to a phone line that brings Internet capability to your house. This can be
provided by Bezeq or by HOT cable. Note: Since HOT is essentially a cable
television company, they do not offer their services in many chareidi neighborhoods,
as their other services are not used by area residents. Mixed neighborhoods, or
areas that in the past had sizeable numbers of irreligious residents, are
serviced by HOT.
You can install
such a line and use it solely for Internet. If you do this, you will simply be
charged a flat monthly fee for having the line. Once you have it, the line can
also be used for phone calls.
Whichever company
provides you with an Internet infrastructure will also supply you with a
modem/router. Generally, the company maintains ownership of this device and you
have to return it if you cancel the line. While the line is in service, some
plans require you to pay a monthly rental fee for this modem. Many plans
include it for free.
Often, you will
need to pick it up from a Bezeq or HOT location. (If someone other than the
person listed as the official line holder picks up the modem/router, the
messenger will need a letter from the line holder with his ID number
authorizing him to do so.) The modem/router will need to be programmed; the
service provider whom you choose for your line will give you directions for
this.
Internet service
providers in Israel include, but are not limited to, 012, 013, 014, 017 and
018.
Another option is
Internet Rimon. The advantage of this company is that they provide filtered
Internet. They have many options available to suit your needs. You can choose
to set the filter for the duration of your service or include a password to
have the ability to change your viewing level either for short or long term.
Their number is 1-800-222-234, and their webpage can be viewed here.
Internet Rimon
also has a sister company geared toward chareidim called Internet Etrog:
1-800-222-238. To view their webpage, click here.
If the line is
being used only as a phone line, 5 megabytes will be sufficient for most
people. If you are expecting heavy Internet use, such as uploading or
downloading heavy files, you will need more. Here, too, it's worthwhile to
compare prices and to try bargaining.
One primary reason
to obtain an Internet line is to set up a VoIP line. See Phone Services for
more information.
